Sanctuary Asia's ‘Wild Maharashtra Photography Contest’ Last Date for Entry: 15th March 2012

Entries can be mailed to: sanctuaryphotocontest@gmail.com Sanctuary Asia

Sanctuary Asia announces an exciting new wildlife photography contest that seeks to highlight the natural heritage of the western-Indian state of Maharashtra.
The best images will not only be awarded fabulous prizes but will also be featured in Sanctuary’s forthcoming coffee table book ‘Wild Maharashtra’.
The wild diversity of Maharashtra is directly linked to the varied ecosystems found in the state, coupled with its wide-ranging climate. The incredible north-south mountain chain of the Western Ghats, for instance, harbours plant and
animal species found nowhere else in the world. The long 720 km. coastline is home to an uncounted number of marine species including whales, sharks, dolphins and turtles. And the fringe zones between land and sea sport some of the richest beaches, mudfl ats, mangroves and wetlands. Inland, Maharashtra protects some of India’s fi nest grasslands where birds
such as the Great Indian Bustard are holding on to survival. The four tiger reserves – Melghat, Pench, Tadoba-Andhari and Sahyadri -- and the (to date) total of six national parks and 36 wildlife sanctuaries are assets whose immense value cannot even be assessed fi nancially. Botanists, biologists, ornithologists, herpetologists and lepidopterists all agree… Maharashtra
is an unparalleled natural paradise.
This entire natural canvas is your stage! You can send us images taken in any of the national parks/sanctuaries/tiger reserves/marine habitats. Send us images you have already taken, or those you are able to take between now and March 15, 2012 when the contest closes. Your subjects could range from habitats and landscapes, to plants and animals and tribals.

The best images, which will be judged by a jury consisting of Sanctuary Magazine staff, will be used to defend the habitats and species photographed.

Lure of the Yellow Mountain Goddess: Expedition to Saser Kangri 2011
After their successful climb on Mamostong Kangri the Himalayan Club Kolkata  team attempted Saser Kangri-I, in 2011. Their planned route was the deeply crevassed and corniced west ridge which had been first crossed during the 1987 Indian-British Army expedition. The expedition also gained the summit of Saser Kangri IV ‘Cloud Peak’, from a common col. Pradeep Sahoo was the leader of both the expeditions.

  1. DIVYESH MUNI  (20 minutes)

Exploring Lalung : The Himalayan Club sponsored an expedition to Lalung valley in Zanskar in August 2011. The five member team consisting of Anju Panniculam, Vineeta Muni, Ajit Bam, Rajesh Gadgil and Divyesh Muni explored the valley and studied various peaks for climbing opportunities. The area holds promise for alpine-style attempts by small groups.

Sandwiched between the northern rim of Nanda Devi Sanctuary and the borders of Western Tibet is an area which is an interesting study of natural beauty, history, geology and culture.
On its eastern fringes are the Bara Hoti plains and on the western fringe the Untadhura pass. To the south is the rarely travelled Girthi Ganga valley. To the North are six different high-altitude passes that connect with the Gyanema and Chitchun areas of Western Tibet. This is the biggest watershed of the Dhauli Ganga.
5.00 pmPETER HABELER
From Everest back to the Austrian Alps
Everest without Oxygen with Reinhold Messner and back to the beautiful Austrian Alps, which are Peter Habeler’s homeland. This will be a soul stirring lecture, with brilliant pictures talking about how the extreme climbs started.

About Speakers:
Peter Habeler (born July 22, 1942) is an Austrian mountaineer. He was born in MayrhofenAustria. Among his accomplishments as a mountaineer are his first ascents in the Rocky Mountains. He was also the first European to climb on the Big Walls in Yosemite National Park.
He began climbing with Reinhold Messner in 1969. Several accomplishments in mountaineering followed. The most notable event was the first ascent without supplementary oxygen of Everest in 1978 together with Messner, which had previously been thought as impossible. Habeler set a further record by descending from the summit to the South Col in only one hour.
Other eight-thousanders (mountains over 8000 m) that Habeler has summited are Cho OyuNanga ParbatKangchenjunga and Hidden Peak. The ascent of Hidden Peak was made with Messner in 1975, Alpine-style in three days, and is seen by some as ushering in a new era of Alpine-style ascents of eight-thousanders, in contrast to the ‘siege’ tactics which had largely prevailed to this time. It was the first time an eight-thousander had been climbed Alpine-style.
He founded the Peter Habeler Ski and Mountaineering School in his hometown of MayrhofenAustria. The school is now run by his son, though Peter still teaches on occasion.
Dr Raghunath Godbole:  is an Gastrointestinal & Laparoscopic surgeon and Hon. Local Secretary of HC, Pune Section. He is the founder of B.J. Medical College Mountaineering Club, Chairman of the Indian Medical Association Trekking Club and Medical adviser to various clubs like Giripremi (Pune), Saad Mountaineers (Mumbai), and South Calcutta Mountain Lovers Association (Kolkata). He has organised and led 17 High Altitude Treks in Himalaya and over 100 treks in Sahyadri so far. He was medical officer on two mountaineering expeditions (Satopanth & Mukut Parvat East). Recently, his CD book - Mt. Everest : Geographical & Historical Highlights was released in Pune to support the forthcoming Giripremi's 'Pune Everest Expedition 2012'
Cyrus Shroff, has been climbing in the Himalaya since 1990, has done his basic and advanced course from NIM, has done a Mountain Instructor’s Course from NOLS (USA), and in the Himalaya he has made many first ascents. He is active on the climbing and trekking scene in the Sahyadris.
Harish Kapadia is a Mumbai based explorer and climber who has been in the sport for almost five decades. He has made number of ascents and explorations. He was the Hon. Editor of the Himalayan Journal for 37 years and has written a number of books on his explorations and climbs. He has received many international and national awards. In last decade he has been exploring different valleys of the unknown Arunachal Pradesh.
Ashutosh Mishra has been trekking for several years now and is an ardent reader and researcher of the Himalaya. He is constantly looking out for trails and routes that are unusual and less frequented. An interesting aspect of the treks, which Ashutosh organises, is the use of modern technology for purposes ranging from team formation to navigation.
He forms his teams over Internet forums to bring in a variety of experiences into the team. Similarly, he uses Google earth data and pictures in his handheld GPS device to supplement navigation through rarely travelled terrains.
Ashutosh has carved out a multimedia presentation containing moving pictures, still pictures, captions, marking, Google Earth images and music to vividly share details of his team’s adventures.
Tapan Pandit is an HC member from West Bengal. He has undertaken several exploratory treks in past decade. He treks with his wife and small group of friends.
Deepak Vijaysinh Bhimani, apart from being a prominent industrialist, is also a seasoned photographer, nature lover and an amateur astronomer. He takes a keen interest in photographing total solar eclipses, comets and planets. He is the past president of the Amateur Astronomer’s Association of Mumbai, and has been felicitated by the Indian planetary society for his contributions to the field.
Divyesh Muni:  An active member of the Club, Divyesh has been climbing since three decades. He prefers to explore new areas and attempt new routes. He has been concentrating on East Karakoram and Ladakh regions for the past several years and has participated in and led several joint expeditions. Among his 25 Himalayan ascents are several firsts. His noted climbs include Kamet, Rangrik Rang, Manirang, Kagbhusand, Sujtilla West, Chong Kumdan I, Bhujang, Khang Shiling. He is a Chartered Accountant by profession.
Pradeep Chandra Sahoo is an engineer presently stationed in Harare, Zimbabwe overseeing the business interest of his company in Southern Africa. After an initial introduction to the Himalaya as a student at University of Roorkee, he completed his Basic and Advanced Mountaineering Courses (1992) and Alpine Style Climbing Course (1993) from HMI, Darjeeling.
Over last two decades, he had organised and participated in over 10 Himalayan expeditions including Sri Kailash, Shivling, Kamet, Panch Chuli, Mamostong Kangri and Saser Kangri. He has been a life member of Himalayan Club since 2006.

Volunteers required for Mahashivratri Festival 2012 to protect Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP)

Dear Prospective Volunteers,

I am writing to you from the Conservation Action Trust (CAT), a registered non-profit organization formed to protect the environment, particularly forests and wildlife.

If you have been looking for an opportunity to contribute towards the conservation of the environment then here it is.

You may be aware that every year on the occasion of the Mahashivratri Festival (which is on the 20th of February 2012), thousands of devotees visit the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) from various points other than the main (official) entrance at Borivali. These include areas such as Yeoor in Thane and Tungareshwar WLS near Vasai to pay homage.

Past experience has proven that the safety of the Forest and Wildlife are highly endangered on this day. The huge mass of people entering the park bring with them threats such as forest fires, dumping of plastic, bottles, leftover food etc.

In order to curtail these problems and protect our wildlife and forest we continually involve volunteers at different locations of the National Park as mentioned above and thanks to that we have seen a marked improvement.

The volunteering activity will involve assisting the forest guards, NGO groups and police in confiscating the following in order to avoid any harm to the forest:
· Plastic bags (thin plastics)
· Inflammable item such as cigarettes, bidis, match boxes, etc
· Tobacco, supari packets, etc
· Agarbatti

Basic food will be provided. Volunteers would have to carry their own water. You could carry your own snacks too. It will be advisable to wear comfortable shoes and clothing and carry a cap. Because of the nature of work and the hours required to be put in, we recommend that teenagers and above volunteer.

To register and if you have any queries you can contact Georgina Fernandes at (georgina.cat@gmail.com) / 9820 246 588 /25122422 /23 or Shweta Bhatt at shweta@cat.org.in / 9869924210 / 25122422 /23.

This year Mahashivratri will be celebrated on 20th February 2012. The City Forests Initiative in association with the Forest Department and NGO's once again calls upon volunteers to monitor and tackle the large number of devotees that swarm SNGP and Tungareshwar WLS for the celebrations. Inflammables and Plastics will be confiscated from the visitors at the entrance gates. The visitors will also be stopped from wandering into the forest. A vigil will be kept for forest fires, and necessary action taken at the earliest, if required.
...
The continued efforts of the City Forest Initiative and the Forest Department have helped in managing and controlling the situation at SGNP and Tungareshwar WLS. However, to further strengthen and manage the situation in Tungareshwar WLS, especially during Mahashivratri, large-scale efforts are required. This Mahashivratri, we request a greater participation at Tungareshwar WLS, and we hope we will receive full-hearted support and cooperation from one and all.
